Clarence Acox
Director, Ensemble 1
An outstanding educator for over 40 years, Clarence Acox directs the award-winning Garfield High School Jazz Ensemble, which has placed among the top three bands in the Essentially Ellington competition at Jazz at Lincoln Center in 3 of the last 9 years. A native of New Orleans, he graduated from Southern University. In 2002 he received the national Educator of the Year Award from Downbeat magazine, and has been voted Earshot Jazz Musician of the Year.
"My kids often come back and tell me how much playing in the band changed their lives. Playing music — especially jazz — can do that to you. I've dreamed of making that experience available to every kid who wants it."

Kelly Barr Clingan
Director, Girls Ellington Project and Ensemble 2B
Kelly Barr Clingan is Director of Concert Bands and Jazz at Washington Middle School. She has been teaching at her middle school alma mater since 2008. A graduate of Roosevelt High School and the University of Washington, she is rooted in Seattle's celebrated tradition of music education.
Kelly plays trombone in Banda Vagos, a traditional Mexican Banda, performing throughout the Puget Sound area on a weekly basis.

Darin Faul
Director, Ensemble 2A
Darin Faul teaches at Mountlake Terrace High School where he has been directing the concert band and jazz band programs since 1998. Darin is a native of Tacoma, Washington and attended Pacific Lutheran University and the Vienna Music Academy before receiving his degree from the University of Washington. He also holds a Masters degree in Curriculum and Instruction, and has received several awards and recognitions while at Mountlake Terrace including the PTSA Teacher of the Year award, the Rotary Educator of the Month Award, and the Celebrate Teachers Award.
The award-winning jazz program at MTHS has allowed students to travel extensively (including several trips to Essentially Ellington and three trips to Europe) and perform with countless professional musicians such as Jeff Hamilton, Allen Vizzutti, Brian Lynch, and Gary Smulyan to name a few.

Elizabth Fortune
Director, Jazz Orchestra Project
Elizabeth Fortune is the Director of Orchestras and Eclectic Strings at Seattle’s Washington Middle School, and the Director of the award nominated Educational Programming at the Wintergrass Music Festival. For thirteen years, Fortune has been striving to bridge the gap between classical and roots music in the educational setting. She has built the strings program at Washington Middle School into a comprehensive four-tiered curriculum for players of all levels, including two roots music ensembles. In 2014, Fortune was one of 25 semi-finalists out of 7,000 nominations for the Grammy Music Educator Award. Fortune received her Bachelor’s and Master’s of Music degrees with an emphasis on Music Education and violin performance from the University of Montana. She is an active contributor to the Washington Music Educators’ Association, the National Association for Music Education, The Jazz Education Network, The American String Teachers Association, and the International Bluegrass Music Association.

Levi Gillis
Reeds Coach
Levi Gillis is a Seattle based saxophonist and improviser, and a graduate of UW Jazz Studies program. Since moving to Seattle in 2009, Levi has studied and performed with Michael Brockman, Cuong Vu, Ted Poor, Ralph Alessi, Tim Berne and Wayne Horvitz among others. An active member in the Seattle improvised music community, Levi leads the groups Sequoia Ensemble and Bed & Breakfast, performs with The Sky is a Suitcase and Ivan Arteaga's Neijing Ensemble, and is a member of the up-and-coming Seattle soul outfit, The Dip. As a freelance saxophonist and leader, Levi has performed in a variety of styles, from jazz to electro-pop to avant-garde to soul, in many festivals and venues such as Sasquatch Music Festival, the Improvised Music Project Festival, the Earshot Jazz Festival and MusicFest NW. Levi is also a regular participant and past curator of the Racer Sessions, a weekly session dedicated to new, experimental music.

Wayne Horvitz
Director, New Works Ensemble
Composer, pianist, and keyboardist, Wayne Horvitz performs extensively throughout Europe, Japan, and North America. He is the leader of Sweeter Than the Day, Zony Mash, The 4 Plus 1 Ensemble, the Gravitas Quartet and co-founder of the New York Composer Orchestra. A prolific composer, he has been commissioned by the Seattle Chamber Players, the Icicle Creek Trio, Kronos, BAM, Meet The Composer BAM and others. He has produced CDs for Eddie Palmieri, Fontella Bass, Robin Holcomb and Bill Frisell among others. He is the recipient of numerous awards including the 2008 NEA American Masterpieces Award the 2003 Rockefeller Map Grant. He has taught composition and electronic music at Cornish College of the Arts and was the past director of the Jazz Band at the University of Puget Sound.
"The JazzED New Works Ensemble tries to fill in the cracks with classic jazz from lesser known composers, famous jazz artists who do not get presented in big bands, band leaders and arrangers who tend to be relegated to the fringes, and modern composers. Eventually I would like to have an ensemble that fuses the best of classical and jazz ensemble traditions with an emphasis on improvisation and even the creation of new works by living composers, especially students."

Robert Knatt
Director Emeritus
A recipient of the Washington State Golden Apple Award, Robert Knatt has been an educator for over 35 years, most recently at Washington Middle School, where he directed the award-winning middle school jazz ensembles and concert bands. A native of New Iberia, LA, he graduated from Grambling State University. He has inspired thousands of students and helped them develop the discipline to perform jazz at the highest levels.
"A lot of people are surprised when they hear for themselves just how good a middle school or high school jazz band can be. But I know for a fact that when you raise the bar high, kids rise up and play at that level. My job is to set that bar."

Ariel Loud
Assistant Director, Summer Jazz Ambassadors
Ariel Loud is an aspiring composer, saxophonist, educator and producer. Born and raised in Seattle’s Central District, he followed in the footsteps of his three older brothers by attending Washington Middle School and Garfield High School. While Ariel spent his earlier childhood studying piano, ballet and breakdancing, it was his jazz education on the saxophone at Washington and Garfield under Robert Knatt, Kelly Barr-Clingan and Clarence Acox that determined his future in music (while being supported with private instruction from saxophonists Nathaniel Schleimer, Gary Hammond, and Mark Taylor). After graduating from Garfield in 2013, Ariel became a core member of Big World Breaks, artistic partner with spoken word poet Troy Osaki and many more. Ariel has developed a passion for teaching through Seattle JazzED, performing a variety of services including lessons, sectionals, combo workshop instruction and the Summer Ambassadors program. Currently, Ariel is studying Contemporary Writing & Production and Film Scoring at the Berklee College of Music in Boston. As of now his goal is to pursue graduate studies in Music Education.

David Marriott, Jr.
Director, Jazz Orchestra Project and Trombone Coach
Described by one reviewer as a "canny and imaginative player whose solos display an extraordinary sense of architecture and conception", award-winning trombonist David Marriott, Jr. is a musician for the next generation -- equally at home as a performer, composer, arranger, and educator. A two-time Earshot Jazz Golden Ear Award recipient and winner of the 1999 National Jazz Trombone Competition, David is an in-demand soloist in a variety of Seattle jazz groups, including the Seattle Repertory Jazz Orchestra, Emerald City Jazz Orchestra, Washington Composers Orchestra, Zubatto Syndicate and his own critically-acclaimed groups Septology, Pop Culture and Triskaidekaband. David has performed and recorded with a wide variety of music heavyweights, from jazz artists like David Liebman, Wycliffe Gordon, Conrad Herwig, Jeff ‘Tain' Watts, Kenny Kirkland, and Branford Marsalis, to entertainment legends like Deltron 3030, Frankie Valli, The O'Jays, Bobby Caldwell, Manhattan Transfer, Don Rickles and Joan Rivers. David has served as director of the jazz bands at both the University of Washington and Edmonds Community College, and teaches at many summer workshops each year including the University of Washington Jazz Workshop, Drayton Harbor Music Festival, and Shoreline Jazz Camp. David is also an active recording artist, having appeared on over fifty albums to date in styles ranging from jazz to hip-hop, from blues to Broadway, from salsa to soukous. David Marriott, Jr. is a Yamaha Performing Artist and endorses Yamaha trombones.

Kate Olson
Reeds Coach
Kate Olson is an improvising saxophonist and woodwind teacher based in Seattle, WA. She can be heard performing with her own projects Syrinx Effect, KO SOLO, and the KO Ensemble and as a collaborator with Ask the Ages, Only Trio, the Seattle Rock Orchestra, the Royal Room Collective Music Ensemble (led by Wayne Horvitz), the Seattle Jazz Composer's Ensemble and multiple other groups. Kate has a BA in Music (Jazz Emphasis) from the University of Wyoming and an MM in Improvisation from the University of Michigan. She has appeared on stage with Pauline Oliveros, Allison Miller, Bobby Previte, Patricia Barber and pop music icons Sir Mix-a-lot and Big Star's Third (featuring members of REM, the Posies, and Nada Surf) among others. In 2011 and 2013, Kate was nominated for the Earshot Golden Ear Award in the Emerging Artist category.

Colin Pulkrabek
Director, Introductory Ensemble and Trombone Coach
Colin Pulkrabek is an alumni of the award winning music programs at Eckstein Middle School and Roosevelt High School. He graduated from the University of Washington in 2011 with a degree in jazz studies. Colin has been an active participant in the local music scene since 2006 and has toured the US with his own bands as well as the Harry James Orchestra.

Naomi Siegel
Trombone Coach
As a trombonist, composer and educator with a jazz background, Naomi produces music in a spectrum of settings, including world dance music to folk music to experimental improvisational music. After earning a Jazz Trombone Performance degree from Oberlin Conservatory in 2006, Naomi made her way to the west coast where she has been impacting the Bay Area and Seattle with her creative sounds and fresh teaching approach ever since. In 2012, she received the Earshot Jazz Golden Ear Award for Best Emerging Artist. She records and tours actively with her duo Syrinx Effect with Kate Olson - a folk/punk/jazz duo using loops and electronics. In addition to leading her own ensembles The ODAT Band, Sunchasers and performing as a soloist, Naomi is a collaborating member of the Jefferson Rose Band, Picoso, Thione Diop's Afro-Groove and The Royal Room Collective Music Ensemble. Naomi has been teaching music since 2003 and is passionate about helping students find their individual voice and expression through music education. She teaches private lessons in trombone and improvisation and teaches for several non-profits including Seattle JazzED, Seattle Music Partners and the Jazz Night School.

Tony Sodano
Rhythm Section Coach
Tony Sodano received his Master's degree in Music Education from Washington State University as a multi-instrumentalist focusing on electric bass, percussion and guitar. During his studies, he composed for and instructed the Washington State University Marching Band Drumline and stayed active in a variety of ensembles at the University. He has coached music at several high and middle schools around the state of Washington. After receiving his Master's, Tony spent two years working with Celebrity Cruises playing bass in their showband around the world. He performed with numerous international acts such as Hollywood pianist Pearl Kauffman, violinist Nicola Loud, xylophone virtuoso Ian Finkel, and pianist Naki Ataman, the Turkish goodwill ambassador of music. Tony is now in his eighth year as the band director at Garfield High School running the marching and concert bands along with the award winning drumline program. Tony has been blessed to be very active in the Central District neighborhood of Seattle working with students that attend Washington Middle School as well as Garfield. He feels honored to be sharing the world of music education with colleagues in an area that is known for such musical excellence. He is also in his fourth year as a member of the Seahawks Blue Thunder Drumline and has performed with Kenny Aronoff, David Garibaldi, Alan White, Scott Mercado, Owuor Arunga, Michael Derosier, Scott Rockenfield, Ryan Lewis & Macklemore.

Aaron Walker-Loud
Director, All-Star Combos, Masterclass Series and Summer Jazz Ambassadors, Rhythm Section Coach
A producer, composer, musician and noted local educator, Aaron Walker-Loud founded Big World Breaks in 2004 and has since shared the stage with many artists including Janelle Monae, B.o.B., Reggie Watts, Macklemore and Digable Planets; and has also produced live show backing for acts such as Grammy Award winning vocalist Wayna, Choklate, Zo!, Sy Smith, Xperience, JusMoni, Blue Scholars and Massive Monkees. Aaron is a Creative Advantage roster member (Seattle Office of Arts and Culture), an Arts Corps teaching artist, the Seattle JazzED Education Director and directs the following drum lines: Washington Middle School, Roosevelt and O’Dea High School.

Jacob Zimmerman
Director, Ensemble 4 and Reeds Coach
Seattle-based saxophonist and composer Jacob Zimmerman is an extremely versatile and integral part of the local creative-music community. Jacob studied music at the internationally renowned Garfield High School, the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston, and Mills College in Oakland. His teachers have included Roscoe Mitchell, Jerry Bergonzi, Joe Morris and Anthony Coleman. In 2014, he was awarded a Golden Ear award from Earshot Jazz for Emerging Artist of the Year. A passionate educator, Jacob specializes in teaching improvisation in both private and ensemble settings. Jacob is also an active board member for the Seattle-based New-Music record label Table & Chairs.
